Web Reference: Feb 14, 2026 · Vim is a highly configurable text editor built to make creating and changing any kind of text very efficient. It is included as "vi" with most UNIX systems and with Apple OS X. Vim provides both a terminal screen user interface as well as a graphical user interface (called gvim). Vim's documentation describes it as an improved form of the older vi text editor (though it is built from a distinct codebase). Vim is a greatly improved version of the good old UNIX editor Vi. Many new features have been added: multi-level undo, syntax highlighting, command line history, on-line help, spell checking, filename completion, block operations, script language, etc.
