Web Reference: It seems the unmask command fails when there is no existing unit file in the system other than the symlink to /dev/null. If you mask a service, then that creates a new symlink to /dev/null in /etc/systemd/system where systemd looks for unit files to load at boot. I don't think thats how the final permissons are calculated, what if the unmask value is 077 how would you subtract 666-077 in that case ? Aug 24, 2016 · To actually unmask the masked service x11-common, I had to delete the symlink to /dev/null and sudo apt-get install --reinstall x11-common && sudo systemctl daemon-reload. Now when I query it with systemctl status x11-common I see the service has a nice green circle and is loaded and active (exited) although it has no unit file.
