Bethune-Cookman University Colors Unveiled: A Vibrant Journey Through School Spirit

Bethune became the first Black woman to lead a federal agency when she was appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt as the secretary to lead the National Youth Association (NYA). She started a private school for African-American students which later became Bethune-Cookman University.

From Bethune-Cookman University, the historically Black university she established in Florida, to her founding of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), to her work in the federal government, Bethune has left a lasting heritage of goodwill and courage to inspire the next generation.
