One of Java's weaknesses is the lack of a standard framework. Do you use JSP, ColdFusion, Spring or something else? So that's why there's so much bad Java code -- no standard framework like Ruby. A lot of the programming problems that we see in Java come from programmers that think they can just download stuff and thread it together, not having a good understanding of the design patterns. So it's lazy programmers. And yet I see it all over the web. PHP was invented for the web. Java was not intended for it but is used for it, despite the shoe-horning into some applications. One of the strengths of Java is the fact that it is installed on practically every computer. And that's one of its weaknesses, since it means that Java's security holes can be exploited on nearly every computer. Java plug-ins are a problem. They add a security hole to browser based apps. Java's wide open nature is the security hole. That's scary when so much stuff is hosted on the cloud today. Java's major weakness these days is that it doesn't work on shared hosting as well as PHP or Ruby on Rails. They say Java hosting is cheap, but the admin time to make it work is not worth it. There's no reason to learn it. Learning Java is not a waste of time. It gets used for everything from server apps to games. Java is not as well documented as PHP. And PHP is taking off for both web development and application development. Its biggest headache and security holes are still the plug-ins. There aren't very many community supported plug-ins for Java. It seems like there isn't much support for Java. Oh, tech support gets lots of calls on Java. And that's why it is stupid.
