Web Reference: Note the variable interference colors (XP), caused by variable thickness of the biotite grain. This biotite is armored (surrounded) by magnetite (black, opaque mineral) and lots of quartz and plagioclase. Biotite, with more Fe-rich compositions is common in dacitic, rhyolitic, and trachytic volcanic rocks, granitic plutonic rocks, and a wide variety of metamorphic rocks. Objective: To determine the refractive indices, birefringence, pleochroism, and optical sign of biotite using a petrographic microscope. Examine the biotite thin section under plane-polarized light (PPL). Rotate the microscope stage and observe any changes in color.
