Today, people use writing constantly: in books, messages, signs, schoolwork, websites, and laws. But thousands of years ago, writing did not yet exist. Human beings could speak, remember, count, and draw pictures, but they did not yet have full systems for recording language in a lasting visual form. In ancient Egypt, one of the earliest and most famous writing systems in the world began to develop: hieroglyphic writing. An early form of this writing was already in use in Egypt around the time of the first pharaohs, and some of the earliest known hieroglyphs appear on a famous object called the Narmer Palette. To understand why this matters, it helps to think about what writing makes possible. Without writing, a society must depend on memory and spoken communication. That works for many things, but it has limits. Writing allows people to record names, events, religious beliefs, taxes, trade, ownership, and royal achievements. It makes it easier to organize large states, preserve traditions, and send messages across time. Once writing appears, history changes. It becomes possible not only to live in the present, but also to leave a permanent record for the future.
