YouTube Excerpt: *You may not use any of this video at all or reproduce it in anyway especially without my permission* A week or two before this was filmed, I watched a YouTube video of NS 176 with NS 1801 and a nice fresh blue 1952 GE 80 tonner switcher engine on a flatcar. I showed it to my friend and jokingly said something along the lines of, “how I wish that switcher came up here”... little did I know I was completely jinxing myself, but in a good way. The next week, my friend was doing a morningly check of the Berea, OH railcam rewind when he saw NS 316 pulling into Cleveland with the same blue 80 tonner in the consist. He sent me the screenshot of it passing the camera and boy was I mad as it had passed at around 4 in the morning while pulling into NS Cleveland Rockport yard. I was thinking the train had kept it in the consist and continued east, but I was wrong. Later in the day, a local railfan caught 316 passing through Mentor, OH reportedly WIHTOUT the 80 tonner... I was thinking this could only mean that they dropped it off while they were working Rockport yard. After school, I decided to take a chance and have my mom drive me past Rockport, almost a 30 minute drive, as I REALLY wanted to catch the slick blue switcher. Luckily, it was there indeed! I got kind of a crappy shot but was just happy to see it. It was a huge mystery to me as to, what route it took to get here, why in the world they had dropped it in Cleveland, and what the “S” logo on the side was but more info on all that a bit later... A few days later (the day right before this video was filmed) I got a heads up from JTR Bricks Railfanning saying that an MBTA F40 paired with a MDTX F40, both gutted and on flatcars had departed GE (Wabtec) in Erie, PA. They had left Massachusetts about a month earlier and were transported to GE via CSX. Beginning their stages of rebuild into F40PH-3Cs, GE stripped them and then they were ready to head to Holidaysburg, PA at Curry Rail Services for sandblasting before further rebuilding progress back at GE. Since Curry Rail in Holidaysburg is along NS trackage, they needed to be shipped via NS which is why they ended up in Rockport, dropped of by NS 315. About a week later, NS 10N picked them up and took them east into PA which is where they are still currently at being sandblasted, and will eventually come back on NS 15N to be dropped at Rockport and put on 316 to be taken back to GE in Erie, PA for final rebuilding and repainting before they re-enter service on the MBTA! Anyway, the day after JTR gave me the heads up that they were picked up, I had my mom take me by Rockport again to catch the super rare F40 pair sitting there! They were surprisingly in a good spot for pictures! But I was even more stoked to see that the 80 tonner from just a few days ago was still there, and this time was in a much better spot for photos than the first time I went a few days before! I was so happy I was able to get better and clearer shots of it... and seeing all of this rare stuff there definitely made it my best trip to Rockport! So back to the story of the 80 tonner... at first it was a mystery why this unit came to Cleveland, as it was on that NS 176 down in the south about a week before it came into Cleveland. A couple days after I took this video, it showed up headed west by the deshler cam no longer on NS, but on CSX! It took me a while to figure out what the big “S” logo on it was, and where exactly it was headed, but with a lot of research on the internet and with help from the very kind folks on the Deshler, OH railcam of Virtual Railfan, I was able to find out that the 80 tonner was dropped in Defiance and was going to be brought to Standridge Color Corp (which was the company of the big “S” logo on the side), for switching services there. Standridge had purchased it from an industrial company in Canada, had it sent to Motive Power & Equipment Solutions in Greenville, SC where it was rebuilt and repainted. When it was done being rebuilt, it was brought to NS Inman yard in Atlanta after being picked up at MPRX by CSX. There at Inman, CSX interchanged it to NS. NS then had 176 take it from Atlanta, dropping it off at NS DeButts yard in Chattanooga, TN. From there, NS 178 took it to NS’s largest yard, Moorman Yard in Bellevue, OH. After that, 316 brought it up to Cleveland and dropped it there in Rockport which I am super thankful for. After that, the CSX D767 interchange turn local from Parma, OH grabbed the 80 tonner out of Rockport and dropped off on CSX after going back to Parma. From there, CSX Q565 took it to Willard where CSX Q567 took it to Walbridge, OH. Finally, CSX Q201 brought it from Walbridge to Garrett, IN. After that, a CSX local out of Garrett dropped it off in Defiance, OH for delivery to Standridge Color Corp (SCBX)! Tbh, the routing decided for the 80 tonner was very strange as CSX and NS interchanged it twice. There were many other way more efficient routes it could’ve taken, but I’m not complaining!
