YouTube Excerpt: CATHEDRAL LAKE TRAIL - This trail is located near Aspen/Colorado, about 1.5 hour drive from where we are staying in Glenwood Springs. The trail begins at an altitude of around 10,000 ft. and climbs to about 12,000 ft. Glenwood Springs is about 5,500 ft., so that’s double the altitude. We took Hwy 15 though beautiful mountain scenery up to Cathedral Lake Road, then turned to go to the trailhead. Cathedral Lake Road is dirt mountain road, extremely bumpy and rocky, with large dips. I was super anxious driving Nicki’s car down it. I thought we were going to bottom out. The road is about 3/4 mile long, but I got so nervous I parked it at the 1/2 mile point and we walked to the trailhead. The trail was hard! It climbs relentlessly up into the mountains until you reach a beautiful alpine lake, created from melted snow. The altitude was so high I had trouble breathing and felt a bit disoriented from all the exertion. Our dog Milo was feeling it too. He was dragging. That’s right, we brought our dogs! One thing you won’t see in the video is an encounter we had one the way back to the car. The sun was going down rapidly, and dusk is when wildlife like bears, mountain lion, elk etc. become active. Remember, we were with 2 little dogs. All of a sudden we heard something big crashing through the underbrush to the right of us. I instinctively had an “oh shit” moment. We looked and saw a large deer bounding down the mountain. It was amazing to see! There are so many rocks and fallen trees and bushes, but this dear was leaping through all of it like they didn’t even exist. It was *flying* down that mountain! Each time it touched the ground it was like there was a trampoline there that made it spring forward. That was amazing to see!
