While the grandest falls deserve a prominent place on any bucket list, a waterfall doesn’t have to be the tallest, widest or most voluminous to make it a worthwhile travel destination.

We'd appreciate that, and thanks for watching! The 2.1 mile round trip to Fern Falls and Scarsdale begins at the 2WD parking spot, 1/4 mile south of the Scenic 7 sign. The trailhead is right by the sign on the north side, just head on in to the woods through the gap. The trail was well trodden and easy to follow. It isn't marked and the hike is mostly flat and on the level for the first 1/4 mile, where you'll meet a trail split. Turn right at that point, it's very visible and there are now several recently placed volunteer ribbons that guide the way. From there, you'll head downhill for around 0.15 mile as you descend toward East Fork Shop Creek - the creek that feeds the falls. This short stretch is a little bumpy, but you'll soon meet the creek. Follow it downstream 0.25 miles to meet the top of Fern Falls. Go left and cross the creek for the access to the way down and under, or go left to follow the trail to the top of Scarsdale Falls. . The only descents of note are the short climbs down to the bottom of both falls, best accessed from the left hand side. That does mean you'll have to cross the creek for Fern but unless it's seriously highwater, you should be able to find a suitable place to do so. We've visited Fern several times, and it's a highly photogenic fall. I'd recently been made aware of the nearby Scarsdale Falls which was our reason for a visit again so soon. From Fern, we headed down creek and passed a small spring on the right hand side at around 400' away. and then headed right and up into the small drainage creek that is home to Scarsdale Falls, also only around 400' further. There is a smaller lower fall just below it. Above Scarsdale is the very easy volunteer trail that will lead you back to the top of Fern. Super Leeds loves the pool at Fern, it's a place he's spent plenty of swim time in. I have to be quick to take the pics of the water before he muddies the colors up too much though! Getting to the parking spot is pretty easy, google maps will take your right to it. Cell phone signal is poor at best in most areas, so keep that in mind before you go, and download any digital maps you may need in advance.
