The town sits on the banks of the Hotham River and was named after Henry Boddington, a shepherd who grazed sheep in the area in the late 1800s. NOTE: Early settlers in the area included the Farmer, Pollard and Batt families. The Farmer family were the first European settlers in the area originally referred to as 'The Hotham'.. From information we have read recently, the Batt family was not the first family to settle the area.
